Florida Health Literacy Project

Florida Health Literacy Project

Making health information simple, clear, and available for everyone

The Florida Health Literacy Project is an early-stage nonprofit initiative founded by Victoria Gomez, a healthcare analytics professional and advocate for immigrant health equity.

With support from Florida Community Innovation (FCI), the project aims to reduce health disparities in Central Florida by using technology and culturally tailored outreach to make complex health information easier to understand.

We’re currently preparing to launch our pilot programming this year and are actively building partnerships across healthcare, education, and community sectors, especially in Central Florida.

Our Mission

To ensure that every person (regardless of language, literacy level, or background) has the tools and confidence to understand their health and advocate for themselves and their families.

What We Do

Culturally Tailored Health Workshops (launching soon)

Our workshops will be:

  • Delivered in Spanish and English
  • Designed for accessibility, using plain-language and visuals
  • Led by community health workers and volunteers
  • Focused on topics like screenings, chronic disease, and self-advocacy

These in-person events will bring simplified health materials and personalized support to:

  • Local clinics, community centers, libraries, and schools
  • Spanish-speaking families and recent immigrants
  • Anyone struggling to navigate health care forms, processes, or decisions

Community Partnerships

We work with organizations like FCI, local nonprofits, and public health leaders to:

  • Co-develop educational content tailored to Central Florida’s diverse communities
  • Connect with trusted messengers in the community
  • Expand access to relevant and readable health information

Get Involved

We’re looking for:

  • Students (public health, design, data science) interested in research, outreach, or content development
  • Community organizations open to co-hosting pilot events
  • Funders and mentors who believe in equity-driven health innovation

Victoria Gomez

About

Over the years, Victoria has seen how difficult it is for her immigrant family and people in her community to navigate the United States healthcare system. The information is complicated, resources are hard to find, and people often feel powerless over their own health. She founded this initiative to change that.

With a background in healthcare analytics, Victoria blends data-driven insights with real-world experiences to break down barriers to health literacy. Through culturally relevant workshops and accessible educational tools, she hopes to help individuals take control of their well-being. She believes that understanding your health isn’t a privilege, it’s a right. And when people have the right knowledge, they can advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities.
