Miami-Dade Seeks Community Voices to Shape the Future of Recycling
Recycling just got smarter—and with the help of Miami-Dade County residents, it’s getting even better. In a groundbreaking partnership between the environmental education nonprofit Dream in Green and the civic tech nonprofit Florida Community Innovation (FCI), a new mobile app called Recyclepedia is being developed to make recycling easier, clearer, and even fun for all ages.
Recycling helps reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, and cut down on the amount of waste sent to landfills—making it one of the simplest yet most powerful actions individuals can take for the environment. Recycling makes a difference, and if the Miami-Dade community joins the mission, we can build a cleaner, greener future, together. However, when people don’t recycle correctly (trying to recycle items that aren’t recyclable; recycling items with food contamination; etc.), recycling doesn’t work and costs the community.
Recyclepedia will be a free mobile tool that helps users identify what items can be recycled, locate local drop-off sites, and build better recycling habits through interactive features like mini games and a real-world item scanner. Recycling information is tailored to Miami-Dade County’s rules and comes directly from the Department of Solid Waste Management and other local municipalities.
